This past year has consisted of basically nothing besides nursing school. We knew it was going to be like that, so when the opportunity for us to take a little break from everything came up, we were happy to oblige. Buck has family in California. It's actually where both of his parents are from, and where most of his extended family still live.Well, his first cousin invited to his wedding. And boy was it a fancy, expensive Italian wedding. At first, we set the invitation aside just assuming there was no way we were gonna be able to attend a wedding in California, because I had school. Well I looked at my schedule and saw that it was right during the week that I had off, because it was in between semesters. So we talked about it and decided that since we were gonna drive all the way there, we might as well take the entire week and spend it at the family house in Fort Bragg. Buck's great grandma was a nurse, and she bought the house there, with lots of land with it. It's right on the coast, and only a few miles away from several beaches. Me and Buck actually vacationed there 6 summers ago, right after we got married and said we always wanted to take our kids there. It is seriously the cutest little fishing town, with so much opportunity. Buck's mom grew up going there to visit her grandma, so Buck has also grown up visiting it. And now Buck was able to take his little family there. 5 generations visiting this little home. It's so beautiful there.
This is going to be a really long post, so those of you who want to read it, you better sit down, and get comfy. Kallan has really been into looking at my blog books that I have printed off lately, and looking at my blog online, so I've decided I'm going to start blogging not only for me, but for them, because I know my kids will read all of my blog when I get older. So I want to document everything that happened, because I know they will maybe remember some of it, but have the whole story here for what they don't remember.
We planned on being gone from a Sunday, to a Sunday. I was supposed to work all day the Sunday we were planning on leaving, but I had asked a co-worker to cover me, and he accepted. I was covered and we were good to go. Well on Saturday night, he told me that his wife unexpectedly went into labor and he was no longer able to work that shift for me, and someone had already called in sick for the day, and I didn't want to leave my team so short-staffed. So I took the shift back and frantically called everyone I worked with asking them to cover me. Well, one awesome guy was able to take the last half, and I was able to leave work at 1100 am and we headed out from our home around 1 PM. We drove about 5 hours, and suddenly the whole front end of our new-to-us car started to shake and rattle so badly we kept having to pull over on the freeway. We were just outside of Elko. So we stopped in Elko, and had our tires balanced and rotated, hoping this would fix the problem. Well they were all really out of balance, so we crossed our fingers that everything was fixed, and headed out again. We didn't make it 20 miles. We turned around and went back into Elko, with Buck saying that the vacation was over, because there was no way we were making it home, let alone to California. I was heartbroken. We had already cancelled the trip once, because Buck's work is struggling right now and had already had two rounds of lay offs. But he made it through the lay offs, so we decided to go. Then my work situation happened, and then we had car problems, stranding us in Elko, Nevada. Why weren't we supposed to go on this trip??! I broke down and started crying. I needed a break from school so badly. We said a family prayer.
We called my dad, whom we had been talking to about the car and its issues since they started, told him it was a no-go, and that we were stuck. Without missing a beat, he told us to check into a hotel, and that he was loading up his truck with a trailer and coming to get our car. AND he brought us my little brother's car so we could still go on the trip. Again, I cried haha. We checked in to our hotel around 8 PM and relaxed and went to bed. My dad and brother showed up a little after 1 AM and went to bed. In the morning, we all got up, got everything moved over to Keaton's car, hit up Denny's for some grub, and parted ways. We were back on the road, headed toward our vacation, and were pretty much problem free from that point on! We drove another 8 hours, (the boys were Rock Stars for all but the last hour of it) and were greeted by Buck's parents at the house, and they had beds and dinner ready for us. I'm so thankful that parents keep taking care of you, even when you become parents yourself. We all slept great that night, and the next day we woke up and played at the house for half of the day, while Buck and his dad repaired part of the roof on the house that was leaking. Then, once that was done, Buck's parents had to head back to taking care of Buck's grandma. We decided to go to the beach to watch the sunset! The pictures below are of the boys' first time ever being a beach, and it was a hit! They took to the sand like little crabs, and played until we left.
The sunset was really pretty
There are several beaches in Fort Bragg, but there is this one there called Glass Beach. A long, long time ago, the city used the ocean as a dump. They dumped everything in the ocean; old cars, all sorts of metal, and glass. In the above picture, you can see in the middle of the two rocks, a conglomeration of old metal that's been washed by the waves. All the glass broke, and was smoothed by the waves, and washed up on shore, so much to the point that there was no sand that could be seen. Just glass pieces. It's actually really cool to see. When we were there 6 years ago, there was still a ton of glass. But people take the glass with them when they visit the beach, so when we went this time, there was barely a fraction of what used to be. We found a little cove and played for an hour. We did take any glass with us. I just took pictures of the glass.

A couple times while we were there we got fresh homemade ice cream at Cowlick's. And we found this onsie gem for Buck at one of the stores there on main street. He's been wanting onsie pajamas with a butt flap forever.
We slept really good at the house each night.
We went to the beach each day we were there. They boys never got bored or whiney while there. Just really sandy!
And I mean really sandy! I'm sill cleaning sand out of Jace's ears.
Looking for glass at Glass Beach
This is the glass I was talking about at Glass Beach. See how the edges are all smooth? The beach is covered in it, along with rocks. But you used to not be able to see the rocks
